Sports Against Crime initiative saves kids from criminal activities in Christiana

Young girls from Utlwanang location in Christiana in the Lekwa-Teemane Municipality had a grand time when they took to the sports fields, during the Sports Against Crime netball tournament.

The tournament was organised by different stakeholders led by the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management as part of the initiatives to strengthen the fight against crime in the Province.

Director for Crime Prevention and Partnerships Ms Florence Nchoe said the tournament presented an opportunity for young people to show off their skills on the netball pitch.

"We are now killing two birds with one stone. Taking our kids out of the streets and investing in the talent that our kids are showcasing currently. They would've possibly be engaging in criminal activities, more especially now that schools are closed, but at least they are now playing netball and it shows that they are doing something that they love."

“The sports Against Crime initiatives gives an opportunity to encourage the youth to move away from wrongdoing and see sport as a way of making their lives better,” said Nchoe.

The three participating teams from different sections of Utlwanang location were given netball kits and movable netball poles from the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation for them to be able to organise themselves friendly games from time to time.

Today’s activity was arranged as a result of the previous Crime Prevention Through Enviromental Design (Letsema campaign), held in August where a de-bushing programme was carried to clear a number of crime hotspot areas in the township.

One of the hotspot areas cleared during the Letsema de-bushing campaign has been identified for establishment of a netball ground.

"The netball ground will be our legacy project while at the same time we are permanently dealing with the crime hotspot," said Ms Nchoe.

The following stakeholders have participated on the success of the initiative: Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality, Department of Correctional Services, Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, South African Police Services, Department of Health, Community Police Forum, Community in Blue Patrollers and Community Development Workers.
